I'm often disappointed, but I find some fascinating stuff too. Like this post.

I love history, I love delving into the past to find out the who, what, where, why, and I see you do too.

Your Dr Abner Landrum should be more widely known, it looks as if he started a movement that would save countless live from sickness, misery, early death.

His work seems to me to be in the same vein as that of Doctor John Snow, who tracked down the source of a cholera outbreak in london, proving that cholera was not contracted from a "miasma", but was transmitted by contaminated water. This he did by plotting on a map the cases of cholera, interviewing families, and finding that the one commonality between all the cases, was that they drank water from the broad-street pump.
Of course, nobody believed him, until he persuaded the local parish council to disable the water pump by removing its handle. As soon as that was done, the cholera outbreak ceased.
Snow carried on his studies of water as a source of disease, and was largely responsible for huge new sewage removal and water-treatment plants being built around the world.
He discovered that cities needed clean water, fresh air, and safe removal of their filth.
so... I'll read more about Dr Abner Landrum, and go dipping further into your blog!soubriquethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01151288534629885195noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6261818599457878184.post-76320795066044184532010-11-24T18:48:10.347-05:002010-11-24T18:48:10.347-05:00Pottery is my passion! Undoubtedly one of them (Landrum) was responsible for Dave's literacy. If Dave indeed made around 80% of what a skilled laborer made, there is no indication in either court or census data that indicates he had any income or property. He seemed to slip into obscurity upon dying, with no estate or any record marking his passing and no known grave site.madpotterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12862467020089336656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6261818599457878184.post-56127923632172640822008-08-08T09:59:00.000-04:002008-08-08T09:59:00.000-04:00Hi Gary. As someone who continually studies the system of slavery in the south, it is highly unlikely that a skilled craftsman such as Dave was not compensated for his time. Slaves of the Mechanic class( skilled laborers) typically made 80% of the wages of free persons with similar skills.---AlAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6261818599457878184.post-31432517798041345812008-06-23T20:46:00.000-04:002008-06-23T20:46:00.000-04:00Where I live there's red clay everywhere. I've been thinking there's some special vein of clay I need to find, but it sounds like you all are saying that it's pretty much everywhere. I was told that it's clay if it feels slippery when you make a slip of it (duh). I tried soaking some I thought was clay, but there were lots of hard grains in it, but I had not screened it.
